Adsorption is a surface phenomenon on the available surface area of activated alumina. The molecules are adsorbed from gas/liquid phase and remair on activated alumina. The adsorption takes place both under static & dynamic conditions. The static adsorption capacity is denoted by the equilibrium capacity at specific relative humidity. Most applications of adsorbents, however take place under dynamic condition where the activated alumina is operated at less than the equilibrium capacity depending on design conditions.
The regeneration of activated alumina is done to desorb the adsorbate and bring it back to active form. It can be carried out by Thermal, Vacuum or Pressure swing method except when activated alumina is used for chemisorption applications.
The molecules desorbed by any method are removed from the column by a cold dry purge. The purge gas should be dry.

Molecular sieves, 13X are crystalline Zeolites having a three dimensional sodium alumino-silicate framework with interconnected cavities. Access to these cavities is through pores of uniform diameter of 10A0. The typical chemical formula of 13X molecular sieves is Na2O. Al2 O3. 2.5 SiO2. nH2O The ‘n' depends upon extent of reactivation & can be reversibly driven off & replaced again wit water molecules or other adsobates.
Molecular Sieves, 13X, adsorbs polar molecules with effective diameter less than 10A0. & excludes molecules with effective diameter greater than 10A0.
APPLICATION
- High adsorption capacity, selective adsorption and ability to be regenerated at lower temperatures, makes 13X suitable for, co-current removal of CO2 &H2O from air (air pre-purification) & other gases.
- Removal of H2S & mercaptans from a variety of hydrocarbons and natural gas streams, the separation of oxygen from air, catalyst protection, removal of oxygenates from hydrocarbons.
- Non-regenerative removal of solvent vapours & moisture in air (In insulating glass application)
